Northville Public Schools Proposes Sinking Fund Renewal on August 5, 2025 Ballot

On Tuesday, August 5, 2025, Northville voters will be asked to consider the renewal of the district’s Building & Site Sinking Fund millage. If approved, this renewal would extend the current levy of 0.9357 mills for an additional 10 years, from 2026 through 2035. There is no increase to the current tax rate, and the levy is projected to generate approximately $4.1 million annually.

The Sinking Fund is used to support infrastructure repairs, safety upgrades, and instructional technology investments across the district’s buildings. Northville’s Sinking Fund has been in place since 2011, with renewals in 2015 and 2020, both of which maintained the same tax rate. The current millage expires on December 31, 2025.

Key Focus Areas of the Sinking Fund Renewal Include:

  • Instructional Technology: Continued investment in devices, networks, and classroom technology across all buildings.

  • Energy & Operational Efficiency: Maintaining and upgrading building systems to ensure functionality and efficiency.

  • Health, Safety & Security: Enhancing security systems, entryways, and emergency infrastructure to provide safe and healthy learning environments.

District goals for the Sinking Fund include preserving General Fund dollars for teaching and learning, supporting long-term planning for school maintenance, and protecting the community’s investment in school facilities. The revenue may only be used for infrastructure, safety, and technology improvements—by law, it cannot be used for salaries, textbooks, or buses.

While Northville Public Schools passed a bond program in 2023 to support major district-wide improvements, the Sinking Fund plays a complementary role. It covers ongoing needs that arise as facilities age and supports timely maintenance that prevents more costly emergency repairs.

This proposal was unanimously approved by the Board of Education and is part of the district’s long-range capital planning strategy.
